The app can be found on the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store. Install in the normal way. The initial download is quite small, less than 5MB.

The first time you run the app you must be connected to the internet, preferably using wifi. The app downloads some universal settings on first installation.
You can search for walks before signing in but to download the full details and map for a walk you need to be signed in. You should sign in to the app with your Walkingworld login details - these consist of the email address you used to join Walkingworld and your password. Note that the password is case-sensitive.

If you have forgotten your password select the forgotten password button on the Sign In screen on the app and you will be taken to the website. You will need access to your emails to reset your password.

If you are not yet a member of Walkingworld select the button to Join. You will need access to your emails to join as we send a verification email. Your account will not be active until you have verified your email address.

If you change your Walkingworld login details (such as your email address or password) you will be taken to the Sign In screen on the app the next time you open it. You should then sign in with the new details.
You can use the Walkingworld app for free but taking out an annual subscription brings significant benefits. You will be able to save multiple walks to your device and keep them for 30 rather than 7 days. Walks will download with 'proper' 1:50,000 Landranger and 1:25,000 Explorer Ordnance Survey mapping, with the ability to zoom in closer.

Existing Walkingworld website subscribers do not need to subscribe again for the app. If you are not already a subscriber and wish to do so, click the 'Subscribe' button on the Home page of the app.
Apple in-app subscriptions are on a rolling renewal basis, at the same rate as your first one unless you receive a notification from Apple. You should receive an email shortly before renewal asking you to confirm. If you cancel your subscription during the year the current subscription will remain but it will not be renewed.

If you buy an Apple in-app subscription your Walkingworld account should be updated immediately after subscribing. If this fails - you may receive an on-screen error message - look on the Home screen for a link saying 'Already a subscriber - update the app'. Select this link.

Likewise, if you have re-subscribed you'll need to get the app to update your Walkingworld account. Select the link 'Already a subscriber - update the app'.

If the app fails to update please email support@walkingworld.com, ideally forwarding your Subscription Confirmation email from Apple. We will update your account as soon as we can.
You are only able to search for walks if you are connected to the internet. If you are not connected to the internet a warning will appear and 'Search for a walk' will not be activated.

You can search for walks in four ways:
By postcode – enter either a full postcode (e.g. CA17 4JD) or the first part (CA17)
By place name – enter the place name and then select the correct one from the list that appears below
By Walk ID – you can do this if you know the Walkingworld walk ID. This is a number with up to four digits. Enter the digits only (e.g 2387)
By proximity to your location – if you have location turned on the 'Show nearby walks' button will be activated.

When you have activated a search a list of walks appears. There are 10 walks listed initially, by proximity to your search location. You can tap the button at the bottom to bring up more. Filter the results using the drop-downs at the top for Length, Grade and a set of popular Features. If you have filtered the walks in any way the filter is highlighted in red. You can change the filter at any time and use more than one.
A button on the Home screeen takes you to a list of walks you have saved. You can filter the list in the same way as the results from a search.

Walks are only saved on the device for a limited period of time. When looking in the list for saved walks you can see how long there is before a walk is deleted.

It is not possible to choose the storage location of saved walks on your device, for instance onto an SD card. A saved walk is likely to be 10MB or so and as they automatically delete after a number of days the overall storage requirement should not be that large. You can delete a saved walk at any time.
The walk summary screen gives you an outline of the walk with key details such as length, grade, height gain and expected duraction. You can access the walk summary screen at any time by selecting the left-hand choice from the green menu at the top. The menu items for the map, waymark instructions and directory will be inactive until you have downloaded the full details for the walk.

If you are just browsing walks before choosing one to download you can return to the list of walks by using the back button on Android or the '< Walks' text near the top of the screen on iOS.

After downloading the full details for a walk a number of other items appear and the map, waymark instruction and directory menus at the top are activated. 'Access Info' and 'Additional Info' sections will appear on the walk summary screen, under the description. Subscribers will also get a button for downloading a GPX file for the walk.
When you select to get the full details for the walk the app will collect the waymark instructions and pictures, mapping at several zoom levels and information for any directory entries near the walk. The download can be quite large and may take several minutes. If it fails the app will try again until the map is all downloaded, but will give a warning if the internet connection is lost altogether.

As a subscriber you are able to choose the type and detail of the mapping. You can choose to download 'overview' mapping with ‘no zoom’ which will give you a single layer of mapping. This may be suitable if you are using another mapping app to follow the route and just want the waymark instructions.

If you choose to add an extra zoom level to your mapping to get more detail note that this will increase download time significantly. The standard setting gives you OS Explorer mapping at a little larger than a real paper map. The extra zoom doubles the size of this mapping on screen.

You may choose to have ‘street’ mapping instead of the OS Landranger and Explorer maps. This mapping is actually better for urban walks and comes with the higher zoom level as well, to show street names and greater detail. Remember to change it back on your next walk if it is a countryside one.

Once downloaded a walk can be followed without your being online.
You do not need to be online to follow a walk. All the walk details and map are saved for offline use.

When following a walk you can swap quickly between the waymark and map screen, using the middle two choices from the green menu at the top. Selecting the button to 'View on map' swaps to the map screen and centres the map on that waymark.

The map retains the chosen zoom level on the map until you quit the walk and open it again from your saved walks.

Use the white left and right arrows to go from one waymark to the next, or back to the previous one. On most devices you can swipe as well.

The OS grid reference is shown as a 6 or 10 figure reference, depending on the preferences you have set in Settings.
To see your position on the map you need to turn on location on your device. You can choose between two location display styles in Settings. The standard style is a simple red ring with your current position in the middle. If your device has an in-built compass you can choose the style with a compass indicator. Note that this the direction your device is being held in, not the direction you are walking.

Zoom in and out using the + and - buttons top left of the map. Touch a waymark icon to take you to the waymark screen for that waymark.

There are three functions at the bottom of the map:
‘Centre walk’ centres the map on the average position of all the waymarks. It can be useful if the GPS location is off the map.
‘Centre GPS’ centres the map on the current GPS location
‘Toggle Waymarks’ allows you to temporarily hide the waymark positions on the map. It can be useful if the waymark is covering a piece of map you want to see.
The directory shows a list of Walkingworld members near to the walk you are viewing. The list is sorted into categories such as 'Accommodation' and 'Outdoor shops'. Select the member and you can see more information about their business, including (if the member has given them) the email address, website links and contact numbers. A map shows their location.
Walk comment
You can post a comment on a walk by selecting the 'Add Comment' button. This is a simplified version of the comments on the Walkingworld website where you can choose a type of comment (such as a 'navigation correction' or 'dog friendly' comment). We will assume a comment is meant to be made public unless you say otherwise, and we'll make it a 'dog friendly' comment if it is about dogs. If it really is a message just to the Walkingworld administrators please say so in the comment and we'll keep it private.

You don't need to mention which walk it is, as we will be notified which walk you have made the comment on. Don't forget to select the number of stars for the walk rating.

Comments can only be posted if you have an internet connection.

Waymark change report
You can also submit a report on an individual waymark, including a picture if you wish. Select 'Report changes' at the bottom of each waymark. The 'New picture' button allows you to take a photograph or select one from your gallery. Make amendments or add notes to the instructions. When submitting you will be asked if you are still at the location. If you are and have a data connection the app will get your co-ordinates and upload them with your report. If you have no signal you can submit a report later without the co-ordinates.

Note that when you submit a report you give us the right to use your picture and words. We are very grateful for these reports which help other Walkingworld members to follow the routes much more easily.
The Settings screen displays your chosen preferences for units, OS grid reference display, your walk speed and a percentage you can allow for breaks on walks. The last two are used to estimate a duration for the walks, using a combination of walk speed, height gain and any breaks (the estimate is known as Naismith’s Rule). A default speed of 4km/hr is used but you can change this to any whole number between 1 and 10.

The preferences are changed on the website and apply to walks shown on the website as well as on the app. A button below the preferences takes you to the page on the website where you can change your preferences. Note that you need to be online to make changes.

The final display shows your current subscription status.
You can install the app on up to four devices for each Walkingworld member account. If you have reached this limit and one of your devices, say, is no longer in use you can clear all your registered devices. Go to Settings and then 'Change your preferences'. After clearing your devices the first four devices you use will be registered again.
If you no longer want to be a member of Walkingworld we can delete your acccount. Please note it is irreversible. Please send an email to support@walkingworld.com from the email address used for your account asking for your Walkingworld account to be deleted. We will confirm deletion within 7 days.
Map screen sluggish
On Apple phones the map is sluggish and sometimes disappears if the device is set to display in 'zoomed' mode (which makes menus etc bigger). You can change this in device settings under your account.

Walks and maps don't download
Check that your device is not set for 'Low Data' and turn off the VPN if using one.

Apple subscription does not register
If your device does not update to a full Walkingworld subscription account see section on 'Apple in-app subscriptions' above.

2. You acknowledge that the words and pictures you submit to Walkingworld are entirely your own and have not been copied from anywhere else, for instance from a guidebook.

4. Walkingworld reserves the right to not publish a walk or to remove it from the database.
